File formats for profile pictures

  • You are supporting extensions png, jpeg and bmp - but jpg is much more commonly used and I suggest you should be adding this too.

  • I just double checked and it seems for the community profile avatars both jpeg and jpg extensions are supported. What we are missing are gif extensions. Or did you mean something else?

  • @zack, right now jpg files are not shown when you click on the browse button, that only lists jpeg and png, etc. In order to upload a jpg file one has to change to “Show all files …” and then you can upload the jpg too.

So yes, jpg technically works, but the UI doesn’t include them in the browse list by default.

  • That’s a good catch. I’ll have a look.

  • This turned out to be a bit more complex than expected, mostly because it’s very browser and OS dependent, but I think we can improve it. Still figuring out if it will require an upstream patch.

Just ran into this myself. I just changed the .jpg to .jpeg in my filesystem and then Firefox showed it as an option to upload. Strange.

  • I think it’s a browser thing (system-dependent). I changed some settings around, but didn’t seem it changed much.
